The Travel Series: Yellowstone National Park

Aug 12, 2023 | Travel, Life

The Travel Series is a series of interviews about people’s travels around the US and the world to inspire and inform! In this article, Rachel Kovaciny shared about her family’s trip to Yellowstone National Park on their family vacation!

The Destination: Yellowstone national park

The duration: 3 weeks

Did you stay in a hotel or an airbnb? (or similar)

Hotels and camping.

How did you plan your itinerary?

We consulted my inlaws, who have been to Yellowstone several times. They gave us lots of good info about what things inside Yellowstone were worth seeing and what things could be skipped if we didn’t have enough time to see everything.

Did you plan gaps into your itinerary, or schedule everything?

We drove from north-eastern Virginia to Yellowstone and back in three weeks, making lots of stops along the way to see family. So we did a bit of both — we planned what dates to arrive at different places so family and friends could make plans to see us, but we didn’t schedule out what we would do at those stops.

What was your “must do”?

Old Faithful! And it was the last thing we stopped to see in Yellowstone before heading out to Cody, WY for the night.

If relevant, how did you adjust your travel plans due to weather, delays, closures, etc?

We planned to spend two days in Yellowstone, but ended up really spending one day and one evening there. Lots of road construction inside the park made us decide that we would be better off staying in Cody and doing fun things there instead of venturing back into Yellowstone again.

On a scale of 1-10 with 10 being most child friendly, how child friendly was your vacation?

9

What age ranges would you recommend for this adventure?

7 and up? Our youngest is 11, and handled it fine. I wouldn’t want to go on a drive that long with kids who couldn’t already read books by themselves.

What would you do differently?

I would have added a day in so we could go down to the Grand Tetons too while we were in Yellowstone.

What would you do again?

All the cool Yellowstone things, plus spending a whole day in Cody going to museums and so on.

How much did your total trip cost?

About $300 a day if you add all the gas, vehicle wear and tear, food, lodging, museum fees, park fees, and souvenirs for a family of 5. That includes doing many fun things with family and friends on the way to and from Yellowstone too, not simply driving there and back again.
